Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Surgery

One of the most popular bariatric surgery procedures at our practice, laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is an effective weight loss surgery method with which patients at our Arlington and Dallas / Fort Worth-area practice in Tarrant County, Texas have lost thousands of pounds. The procedure alters the natural path of the digestive tract so that part of the stomach and small intestine are bypassed, thus restricting the amount of calories consumed and absorbed by the body. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is both restrictive (restricts food intake by closing off a portion of the stomach) and malabsorptive (limits the amount of calories absorbed by modifying the small intestine), making it one of the most powerful weight loss surgery procedures available for individuals suffering from morbid obesity. In addition, because it is performed laparoscopically, patients experience successful results with minimal post-surgical scarring and a quicker recovery time.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure

During the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight loss surgery procedure, several abdominal incisions are made, and a special instrument called a laparoscope is inserted through one of the incisions. The laparoscope allows Dr. Barnes to view the entire surgery on a video monitor as he performs it.

Next, a small section of the upper stomach is stapled shut to create a smaller pouch. This reduces the size of stomach and the amount the stomach can hold. Then, the small intestine is divided into an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion is connected to the small stomach pouch, which forces digested food to bypass the duodenum between the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine where many of the calories are absorbed. The upper part of the small intestine is then connected to the lower part to allow essential digestive juices such as bile and pancreatic juice into the digestive tract. This connection point resembles a "Y," which is reflected in the procedure's name. The entire weight loss surgery procedure usually takes around an hour or less.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Recovery

Most patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery at our Tarrant County practice in the DFW area  go home the day after the operation. Dr. Barnes will prescribe medications for pain or other conditions, as necessary, and provide patients with instructions that will help ensure a swift recovery. Once patients return home, it is important that they engage in light physical activity such as walking or climbing stairs. These simple activities may seem hard at first because of low energy levels, but as time passes, tolerance for activities will return to normal and improve dramatically as you lose weight. Patients are able to return to work and their normal routine approximately two to three weeks after the operation.
Dr. Barnes and his staff remain dedicated to making sure patients lose weight and keep it off.  Dr. Barnes will give patients post operative instructions to help ensure a safe and successful recovery after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Patients are asked to return for routine follow-up exams for at least two years after their operation. This is important so our medical team can monitor  post operative health and detect any complications that could result in serious health problems.
Our practice also has a team of specially trained staff that helps patients adjust to their new, healthy lifestyle after weight loss surgery. We offer a variety of nutritional and behavioral counseling services to make sure patients stay on track to achieve their weight loss goal  Dr. Gregory Barnes and his staff help patients develop healthy and permanent diet and exercise plans so they can attain the slimmer, healthier body they desire.
