State-of-the-Art LAP-BAND® System Surgery at Dr. Gregory Barnes’s Dallas / Fort Worth-area Practice

LAP-BAND® surgery is an effective laparoscopic weight loss procedure that helps individuals suffering from morbid obesity and its related problems. One of the many benefits of this exciting bariatric treatment is that it allows patients to control the amount of weight they lose. Dr. Gregory Barnes is an experienced bariatric surgeon who offers the LAP-BAND® System procedure at his Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex weight loss surgery practice in Tarrant County. Through his surgical procedures and comprehensive weight loss program, which includes nutritional and behavioral counseling and educational seminars, he is committed to helping patients achieve the most successful weight loss results possible.

The LAP-BAND® System Procedure

During the minimally-invasive LAP-BAND® procedure at our Dallas / Fort Wortharea practice, an adjustable plastic band is inserted into the abdominal area through a laparoscopic incision. The band is then placed over a section of the upper stomach and is secured into position.  At post-operative follow up visits, the band is inflated with saline to constrict the stomach chamber so that it holds less food. Since the band is adjustable, it can be inflated or deflated at any time depending on the specific weight loss needs and goals of the patient. The procedure can be reversed if necessary, unlike gastric sleeve surgery. Learn more about the LAP-BAND® System procedure by visiting our frequently asked questions section and view results from actual patients who have undergone this state-of-the-art procedure in our picture gallery.

Recovery from LAP-BAND® System Surgery

Because LAP-BAND® surgery is performed laparoscopically, pain and scarring are minimal; however, medication can be prescribed to control any discomfort. Most patients   can go home the same day as their operation, with post-operative instructions to help prevent unnecessary discomfort and ensure successful weight loss. These instructions include a liquid diet for at least the first couple weeks after surgery, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding certain foods. Patients are encouraged to engage in light physical activity such as walking to facilitate the healing process.  Most patients return to their normal routine approximately one week after LAP-BAND® System surgery.

It is required that patients return to our DFW-area practice for routine follow-up exams for at least two years after their LAP-BAND® System procedure. Follow-up visits are extremely important following lap band to ensure that it is adjusted properly. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band will be adjusted over time as appropriate, usually until weight loss of one and a half to two pounds a week is achieved. In addition, as part of our comprehensive weight loss program, patients  will have access to behavioral counseling and meet with  a dietician  to develop a diet and exercise plan that suits the patient’s caloric needs and activity level. At the office of Gregory Barnes, MD, we are dedicated to helping patients achieve a healthy weight for improved quality of life.
