Sleeve gastrectomy involves removing a large portion of the stomach to create a stomach tube, or “sleeve,” enabling patients to feel full after eating a very small quantity. To schedule a consultation for gastric sleeve surgery, please contact our bariatric surgeon, Gregory Barnes, MD
Gastric sleeve surgery, also referred to as sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight loss alternative for patients who are not currently able to undergo LAP-BAND® System surgery or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The procedure is designed for patients who are super-obese, meaning that they weigh 500 pounds or more and is used as the first stage in weight loss, followed by conversion to the gastric bypass. It is also available as a primary weight loss option but is not covered by most insurance at this time. Gastric sleeve surgery may also be a more effective alternative for patients with medical conditions such as osteoporosis, anemia, and Crohn's disease. Patients who have gastric sleeve surgery at our facility in Dallas / Fort Worth and the surrounding area, can lose significant amounts of weight with this procedure. In cases of severe obesity, gastric sleeve surgery acts as the first surgical step to reaching the patient's weight loss goals. After a period of several months, once a large amount of weight has been lost, patients are often designated weight loss surgery candidates for other obesity surgery procedures that can bring their weight down to an even healthier level.
Dr. Gregory Barnes will discuss all aspects of the gastric sleeve procedure with you, including all risks and benefits, at your initial consultation.
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed laparoscopically, a technique which uses small surgical instruments and a tiny camera, enabling Dr. Gregory Barnes to visualize the procedure on a monitor. The laparoscopic technique allows for much smaller incisions than traditional surgical methods, as well as a shorter recovery time. Dr. Barnes will remove about 60 percent of the stomach, leaving a smaller stomach pouch in the shape of a tube or sleeve. Not only does gastric sleeve surgery significantly limit the amount of food intake, it also curbs the appetite by giving a feeling of fullness with less food.
Please contact our gastric sleeve surgeon serving Dallas / Fort Worth, Arlington, and Tarrant County to schedule a consultation.
