What is morbid obesity?

Morbid obesity has become an epidemic problem. The condition is characterized by having a BMI of 35 or higher or being at least 80 pounds overweight. Morbid obesity can lead to many other health conditions that can affect one’s quality of life, such as sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and more. Approximately 60 million American adults are considered morbidly obese. Morbid obesity can be treated through weight loss surgery performed by experienced surgeon, Gregory Barnes, at our Dallas / Fort Worth-area practice in Tarrant County.

What contributes to obesity?

Obesity occurs when an individual consumes significantly more calories over a period of time than he or she burns. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including an individual's eating habits or other lifestyle choices, genetic makeup, certain physical or psychological conditions, or diseases.

What problems are associated with obesity?

Obese individuals are at an increased risk for more than 30 serious medical conditions, including hypertension, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke, and heart disease. These conditions, called co-morbidities, can be fatal if left untreated. Fortunately, weight loss surgery, performed by our experienced surgeon, Gregory Barnes, MD, can reduce the health risks associated with obesity.

What is weight loss surgery?

Weight loss surgery is a treatment for morbidly obese individuals who have been unable to lose weight through more traditional weight loss programs.  There are three types of weight loss surgery: restrictive, malabsorptive, and restrictive-malabsorptive. Restrictive surgery involves closing off parts of the stomach to restrict the amount of food it can hold, such as in LAP-BAND® System surgery. Malabsorptive surgery involves redirecting food away from the top portion of the small intestine to reduce the amount of calories absorbed by the body. Finally, restrictive-malabsorptive surgery involves limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold and redirecting food away from the small intestine to restrict food consumption and limit calorie absorption. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is an example of this type of weight loss surgery. Dr. Gregory Barnes is an experienced bariatric surgeon who provides patients from the Dallas / Fort Worth area with procedures using advanced technology. How effective is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is  very effective in helping individuals lose excess weight. After gastric bypass surgery, patients can lose up to 80 percent of their excess weight over one to two years. Studies have also shown that patients are able to maintain their weight loss long after surgery. After LAP-BAND® System surgery, patients can lose as much as 60 percent of their excess weight at a slower and steadier pace than with gastric bypass surgery.
Successful weight loss is not dependent on bariatric surgery alone. Surgery is usually considered a starting point on the path to a healthier life. Patients must be willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes and attend routine follow-up exams in order to achieve the most successful results. How can I prepare for weight loss surgery?

If you are interested in weight loss surgery performed by our experienced surgeon, you must first schedule an initial consultation at our practice near Dallas / Fort Worth. During the initial consultation, Dr. Barnes will determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery. He will then explain the procedure in detail and recommend specific things you can do to prepare before gastric bypass, before LAP-BAND® System surgery, or prior to sleeve gastrectomy or revision surgery. Typically, these recommendations include starting a healthy diet and exercise regimen and completing the nutrition and behavior modification classes we provide. It is important that you follow instructions carefully in order to ensure the most successful surgical outcome.

Why is pre- and post-operative counseling necessary?

Nutritional and behavioral counseling is important and necessary because it helps patients prepare for and cope with various issues that are related to weight loss surgery. Patients must adopt new eating and exercise habits. These changes can impact many other life areas. The bariatric specialists at our practice have tremendous experience in dealing with the physical and mental issues that morbidly obese individuals face, both before and after surgery. With a little guidance, our patients attain a healthier and happier lease on life.

What are the benefits of gastric bypass surgery?

There are many benefits to undergoing gastric bypass weight loss surgery. When performed by an experienced and talented surgeon such as Dr. Gregory Barnes, patients routinely lose 75-80 percent of their excess weight. Most weight loss occurs in the first 12 months after surgery, compared to the more gradual weight loss experienced by LAP-BAND® System patients. Studies have also shown that at least 60 percent of the weight lost is maintained ten years after surgery. Also, because the procedure is performed laparoscopically, patients enjoy minimal post-surgical scarring and a quick recovery time.
In addition, gastric bypass surgery decreases and even eliminates the risk for developing co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes with a 93% cure rate, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease, and more. Patients typically enjoy a slimmer body and healthier life after their gastric bypass procedure.

What are the benefits of LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding?

Individuals who undergo LAP-BAND® System surgery experience a number of benefits from the procedure. LAP-BAND® System surgery is a minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedure, which allows for smaller incisions and a short recovery time. The gastric band will need to be adjusted at monthly follow up visits after surgery. Dr. Barnes can tighten or loosen the band as needed, helping to control and maintain weight loss.  Weight loss achieved with lap band surgery reduces the risks of developing health problems related to morbid obesity, such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, acid reflux disease, joint pain and more, allowing patients to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

What are the benefits of gastric sleeve surgery?

There are many advantages to undergoing gastric sleeve surgery. Unlike other procedures, gastric sleeve surgery does not alter the intestines and therefore it does not have a malabsorptive component, so patients are able to absorb nutrients normally. Gastric sleeve also does not involve inserting a foreign device into the body, as in lap band surgery. As a result of the surgery, patients are able to lose up to 60 percent of their excess body weight within one year.
Just as with gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® surgery, patients who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery by Dr. Gregory Barnes can significantly reduce their weight, improve or eliminate co-morbid diseases, and enjoy a healthier  life.

What is the recovery process like after weight loss surgery?

Because the weight loss procedures performed by our bariatric surgeon are done laparoscopically at Dr. Barnes’s Dallas / Fort Worth-area practice, patients experience minimal scarring and a quicker recovery time than those who undergo open bariatric surgery. Lap band patients usually go home the same day as their operation, gastric bypass patients usually go home the next day, and sleeve gastrectomy and revision patients typically go home in 2-3 days. Patients return to their normal daily activities within 1-3 weeks, depending. Patients are expected to schedule routine follow-up appointments for the next two years to make sure they remain on track. Although follow-up is important for everybody, those who undergo LAP-BAND® System surgery are especially advised to keep monthly follow-up appointments to ensure proper band adjustment for successful weight loss. Follow-up appointments also help Dr. Barnes and his medical team discover possible complications before they become significant problems.
Following surgery, patients follow a customized diet and exercise routine during recovery and beyond. It is important that patients stick to the new diet routine as some foods they used to tolerate will now be intolerable. Regular exercise is also important, as walking and moving helps recovery early on and also helps instill the activity habits patients will need to maintain weight loss in the long run.
During the recovery process, it is important that patients have a strong support system. Weight loss surgery is a life-changing procedure that can have a dramatic impact on all aspects of life. Patients are encouraged to attend support groups designed for bariatric surgery patients and may also participate in professional counseling, as well as enlist the help of family and friends during their transition to a new lifestyle.
