Determining Your Candidacy

Individuals who are interested in undergoing LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery at our Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex-area practice in Tarrant County must schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Barnes prior to the procedure. During the consultation, Dr. Barnes will help the patient determine if the individual is a suitable candidate for LAP-BAND® System surgery. Some qualifications for surgery include:

Prospective patients must have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher with serious medical conditions. Individuals with a BMI of 40 and above qualify for surgery with or without other serious medical conditions.
Prospective patients must have attempted to lose weight in a controlled and documented weight loss program. LAP-BAND® System surgery is usually considered after other weight loss methods have been unsuccessful.
Prospective patients often experience a variety of serious health problems related to their excess weight. These health conditions are called co-morbidities. Morbidly obese individuals are at risk for more than 30 co-morbidities, including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, stroke, and hypertension.
Prospective patients must understand that LAP-BAND® System surgery is not a quick-fix weight loss solution. They must be willing and determined to make the necessary lifestyle changes, including changes to diet and exercise.

After candidacy is determined, Dr. Barnes will inform patients about how to prepare for the LAP-BAND® System procedure, as well as what they can expect after surgery. He also will explain the details of the LAP-BAND® System procedure and address any questions or concerns the patient may have. Preparing for LAP-BAND® System Surgery

Our practice uses a multidisciplinary approach to help individuals seeking weight loss surgery achieve and maintain a fit lifestyle.
